If you caught last night’s US Open Cup final, you may have noticed something strange. DC United keeper Josh Wicks, after Freddy Montero had just scored the game’s first goal, decides to get up and exact his revenge immediately. By stomping on Montero’s hand while he is on the ground. In plain view of the world and all of its referees. Wicks was shown a red card for his actions.
How he thought he’d get away with that defies explanation. Sadly, this has been brewing for at least a few days. Late in the match against Chicago, Wicks and DC United defender Marc Burch had to be separated after Wicks started shouting at him. The argument was so heated that it looked like Wicks about to rear back and swing before several players stepped in to break it up. After the next corner kick, Wicks went after Burch again. DC United players once more had to step in and keep Wicks away from Burch.
Wicks had looked like he’d finally turned the corner this season and was on the road to being a quality keeper in MLS this season. These two incidents have many wondering if that is truly the case. What is sure is that Wicks has snapped. MLS needs to look at the incident and consider fining or suspending Wicks, forcing him to sit out for a game or two. If Don Garber won’t do it, Tom Soehn should. Behavior like Wicks’ shouldn’t be allowed in MLS. It shouldn’t be allowed, period.
Absolutely agree! Too bad as he had made a number of great saves. But I’ve noticed all season that he yells at his team-mates a lot and appears to be angry when he does so! He really needs to get over himself and remember tha “There is no I in team!” Corny but true!
Well, he should absolutely sit for at least one game for the red card. And they should suspend him for more.
In fact, United should bench him for the remainder of the season. That was mondo uncool. It shows a total lack of self-control, and he doesn’t belong on a soccer pitch, or any other sporting field, if he’s going to behave like that.
I watched that game last night and saw him step on Montero before the announcers even said anything. That was a bonehead play and I hope the coach for DC United benches him for quite a while. I am glad Seattle won, but it was a pretty good match and he really screwed his team big time.
